Not every NIT is given the same level of attention during JoSAA choice filling.
Some have the ranking. Some have the placements. Some have the campus. Nit Surathkal is one of the few that genuinely has all three, and that is why it shows up near the top of serious JEE Main aspirants' lists every year.
295-acre campus in Surathkal near Mangaluru, right on the coast of the Arabian Sea. Running since 1960, first as Karnataka Regional Engineering College and now as one of 32 National Institutes of Technology with Institute of National Importance status. NIRF ranked it 17th among engineering colleges in 2024. The CSE placement rate crosses 98 per cent. The average B.Tech package sits at Rs 16.25 LPA.
If your JEE Main rank falls anywhere between 700 and 6000 in the OS quota, here is everything you need to properly evaluate this institute before filling in your choices.
Total B.Tech seats across all programmes: 958
Nit Surathkal fees for B.Tech through JoSAA counselling:
| Fee Component | Amount |
| Tuition Fee | Rs 62,500 per semester |
| Hostel and Other Fees | Rs 30,000 per semester for hostellers |
| Day Scholar Fees | Rs 20,000 per semester |
| Category | Waiver |
| SC, ST, PwD students | Full tuition fee waiver |
| Family income below Rs 1 lakh | Full tuition fee waiver |
| Family income Rs 1 to 5 lakh | Two-thirds tuition fee waiver |
For DASA admissions, nit surathkal fees work differently:
The waiver structure means students from lower-income families can actually afford to study here. SC, ST, and PwD students pay zero tuition. That matters and should be factored into the decision.
The NIT Surathkal cutoff moves slightly every year based on JEE Main difficulty and counselling participation. The figures below come from the past year's JoSAA data for the Open category.
| Program | Opening Rank | Closing Rank |
| CSE | 1002 | 3184 |
| Computational and Data Science | 2256 | 4529 |
| ECE | 2198 | 5148 |
| Artificial Intelligence | 3314 | 5143 |
| Information Technology | 3600 | 5300 |
| EEE | 5259 | 6760 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 7484 | 12656 |
| Civil Engineering | 9291 | 25337 |
| Chemical Engineering | 12317 | 16042 |
| Metallurgical and Materials Engineering | 16195 | 20677 |
| Mining Engineering | 24674 | 30911 |
| Program | Opening Rank | Closing Rank |
| CSE | 678 | 1605 |
| ECE | 1330 | 3645 |
| Artificial Intelligence | 1664 | 2392 |
| Information Technology | 2067 | 2874 |
| Computational and Data Science | 2268 | 2945 |
| EEE | 3947 | 5859 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 8099 | 11574 |
| Civil Engineering | 5319 | 21513 |
| Chemical Engineering | 9916 | 13529 |
| Metallurgical and Materials Engineering | 15595 | 19414 |
| Mining Engineering | 18912 | 24609 |
One thing worth noting: the Nit Surathkal cutoff for the OS quota is tighter than the HS quota across almost every branch. Students from outside Karnataka are competing in a smaller seat pool against a much larger national candidate base. That compression is clearly evident in the closing ranks.
NIT Surathkal CSE cutoff sits among the tightest in the entire NIT system.
| Category | Quota | Opening Rank | Closing Rank |
| Open Gender Neutral | Home State | 1002 | 3184 |
| Open Gender Neutral | Other State | 678 | 1605 |
| Open Female Only | Home State | 2678 | 3473 |
| Open Female Only | Other State | 682 | 3304 |
OS quota gender-neutral closing at 1605 tells you exactly how competitive this branch is. A rank above 2000 in the OS quota means you are looking at seat movement across later JoSAA rounds to secure a CSE seat here. That is possible, but not something to build a strategy around for a branch this sought after.
Students who miss out on JoSAA sometimes get another chance through CSAB special rounds. Closing ranks here are typically slightly more relaxed:
| Program | HS Gender Neutral Closing | OS Gender Neutral Closing |
| AI | 4786 | Not available |
| IT | 4261 | 3192 |
| EEE | 10720 | 8625 |
| ECE | 7238 | 4955 |
| Mechanical | 17597 | 14571 |
NIT Surathkal placements are the most cited reason students put this institute at the top of their JoSAA list. The numbers from the recent placement season back up that reputation.
| Aspect | Details |
| Overall B.Tech Placement Rate | 93 percent |
| CSE Placement Rate | 98.26 percent |
| IT Placement Rate | 99.12 percent |
| ECE Placement Rate | 96.43 percent |
| EEE Placement Rate | 93.75 percent |
| Highest Package | Rs 55 lakhs per annum |
| Average Package | Rs 16.25 lakhs per annum |
| CSE and IT Average | Rs 12 to 14 LPA |
Companies that regularly recruit at NIT Surathkal placements include Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Tata Motors, Reliance, Infosys, and L&T, among others.
A 98-plus placement in CSE and IT is not something most NITs can claim. What produces these numbers is decades of industry relationships, consistent training programmes, and a location that keeps both tech and manufacturing companies interested in hiring from campus. ECE at 96.43 per cent and EEE at 93.75 per cent both hold up well compared to what most engineering institutes in India actually deliver.
| Program | Karnataka Seats | Other State Seats | Total |
| CSE | 57 | 58 | 115 |
| ECE | 58 | 58 | 116 |
| EEE | 58 | 58 | 116 |
| Mechanical | 86 | 88 | 174 |
| Civil | 58 | 57 | 115 |
| IT | 29 | 29 | 58 |
| AI | 29 | 29 | 58 |
| Computational and Data Science | 15 | 15 | 30 |
| Chemical | 29 | 29 | 58 |
| Metallurgical | 29 | 29 | 58 |
| Mining | 29 | 29 | 58 |
Computational and Data Science has only 30 seats in total. That makes it harder to get into than CSE at most other NITs despite having a less established name. Keep that in mind when filling out choices.
Eligibility: Class 12 with physics, chemistry, and mathematics. A minimum of 75 per cent aggregate for the general category. 65 per cent for SC, ST, and PwD. Valid JEE Main score needed.
What you need to do:
Documents: JEE Main rank card, Class 10 and 12 marksheets, photo ID, category certificate (if needed), domicile certificate (if required), seat allotment letter, and fee payment receipt.
Eligibility: Class 11 and 12 or equivalent from a foreign institution. A minimum aggregate of 60 per cent. Valid JEE Main rank. Born on or after October 1, 1999.
What you need to do:
Documents: a valid passport, Class 10 and 12 marksheets, proof of foreign education, a JEE Main rank card, a photograph, a signature, and SWIFT transfer proof for fee payment.
Straightforward picture:
Students with OS quota ranks between 700 and 5000, or HS quota ranks between 1000 and 6000, should seriously consider NIT Surathkal in their choice list, depending on the branch and category.
JoSAA choice filling with a strong rank is not the time to guess. Which branches are realistic at your rank? Which round strategy makes sense? Whether Nit Surathkal beats another NIT for your specific profile. These are not questions with generic answers.
Mentrovert gives Indian students honest, personalised guidance on exactly these decisions. No college affiliations. No commission-based recommendations. Real guidance built from your actual rank and profile.
Tough call. OS quota CSE closes around 1605 so 3000 is well outside that range. IT, ECE, or AI become the realistic targets instead. Some students try their luck hoping for upgrades in later rounds but that is a gamble, not a strategy.
Not really separate scholarships. It works through tuition waivers based on category and income. Zero tuition for SC, ST, PwD and families under Rs 1 lakh income. Two-thirds off for the Rs 1 to 5 lakh bracket. That is the main financial support structure here.
Mostly yes but it depends on how many seats are available that year. Boys and girls have separate hostel blocks. If hostel does not work out, day scholar option costs less anyway at Rs 20,000 per semester compared to Rs 30,000 for hostellers.
IT honestly. Only 58 seats but placement sits at 99.12 percent, which is about as good as it gets. CSE comes close too at 98.26 percent with more seats, 115 total, so slightly easier to actually land a spot there.
Cutoffs run tighter here than several other strong NITs for CSE. People usually put it right up there with NIT Trichy and NIT Warangal when ranking choices. The coastal location and placement track record both add to why it sits high on most lists.
