Okay, so your rank is out.
It could be 60,000. It could be 85,000. Just touching 1 lakh or a little above. And right now everything feels heavy. Parents are either very quiet or talking too much. Relatives have started calling. And you are sitting there not really knowing what to do with any of it.
This rank is not a catastrophe. We know it does not feel that way right now but it genuinely is not. Every year lakhs of students appear for JEE Main, and a very large number of them do not get anywhere close to where you are. You cleared a genuinely hard exam at a competitive level. The options in front of you are real. They are just not the ones anyone talked about during preparation, and that is why everything feels blank right now.
So let us go through what is actually available. Not in a vague general way.
Around 22 NITs and more than 15 IIITs participate in JoSAA counselling for students in this range. Your percentile here is somewhere between 96 and 97.2. That is a real number.
But here is the thing most students miss completely before counselling starts. What you can get depends enormously on whether you are applying under the home state quota or all India quota. These are not slightly different. They can be 10,000 to 15,000 ranks different for the same branch at the same college. Students who do not check their home state options first end up missing seats that were right there.
Under the home state quota, here is what has actually closed in recent years for this rank range:
| Institute | Branch | Approx Closing Rank (HS) |
| NIT Jalandhar | Mechanical Engineering | 42,155 |
| NIT Jalandhar | Instrumentation and Control Engineering | 38,495 |
| NIT Bhopal | Civil Engineering | 40,724 |
| NIT Bhopal | Chemical Engineering | 35,187 |
| NIT Durgapur | Civil Engineering | 36,902 |
| NIT Durgapur | Biotechnology | 39,655 |
| NIT Patna | Mechanical Engineering | 35,292 |
| NIT Patna | Electrical Engineering | 40,262 |
| NIT Raipur | Electrical Engineering | 42,081 |
| NIT Raipur | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 34,859 |
| NIT Jamshedpur | Civil Engineering | 43,248 |
| NIT Jamshedpur | Metallurgical Engineering | 46,063 |
Under all India quota the numbers are tighter but options still exist:
| Institute | Branches Available |
| NIT Srinagar | Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering |
| NIT Agartala | Production Engineering, Civil Engineering |
| NIT Mizoram | ECE, Electrical Engineering |
| NIT Nagaland | Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering |
This is where many students make a mistake they realise too late.
Everyone is chasing NIT tags so IIITs get dismissed without much thought. But IIITs are built specifically around technology and computing. If that is where your interest lies, an IIIT in a relevant branch can be a genuinely stronger choice than an NIT in something you have no interest in just because NIT sounds better at a family gathering.
Here is what has been available around rank 40,000:
| Institute | Branch | Approx Closing Rank |
| IIIT Kalyani | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 41,775 |
| IIIT Dharwad | Data Science and Artificial Intelligence | 37,258 |
| IIIT Nagpur | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 37,906 |
| IIIT Bhagalpur | Computer Science and Engineering | 38,522 |
| IIIT Una | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 37,252 |
| IIIT Sri City | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 38,934 |
| IIIT Ranchi | ECE with IoT Specialisation | 40,065 |
That Data Science and AI programme at IIIT Dharwad closing around 37,258 in a field with real hiring behind it is not a compromise option. That is actually a good option that most students scroll past because they have never heard of IIIT Dharwad.

Government Funded Technical Institutes. Most students have literally never heard this term and miss real options because of it.
| Institute | Branch | Approx Closing Rank | Note |
| JNU Delhi | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 35,534 | Limited intake, competitive branch |
| BIT Mesra Ranchi | Electrical and Electronics Engineering | 43,915 | Strong placement record |
| BIT Mesra Ranchi | Mechanical Engineering | 44,661 | Core engineering option |
| PEC Chandigarh | Electrical Engineering | 46,663 | Home state quota only |
| IIEST Shibpur | Civil Engineering | 49,928 | Legacy institute, strong alumni |
| IIEST Shibpur | Metallurgical Engineering | 48,023 | Core branch opportunity |
Most students do not even know JNU has an engineering programme. That is an information problem not a quality problem. These are not backup options to be embarrassed about.
Most students with a rank around 1 lakh assume NITs are completely out of the picture. That assumption is wrong and it is costing people real opportunities.
| Institute | Branch | Approx Closing Rank |
| NIT Agartala | Electrical Engineering | 1,25,000 to 1,28,000 |
| NIT Agartala | Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering | 1,38,000 to 1,53,000 |
| NIT Agartala | Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering | 1,63,000 |
| NIT Agartala | Mechanical Engineering | 1,72,000 to 1,80,000 |
| NIT Arunachal Pradesh | Computer Science and Engineering | 1,36,000 |
| NIT Arunachal Pradesh | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 1,41,000 |
| NIT Arunachal Pradesh | Electrical Engineering | 1,61,000 |
| NIT Goa | Civil Engineering | 1,14,000 |
| NIT Hamirpur | Materials Science and Engineering | 1,01,000 to 1,20,000 |
| NIT Hamirpur | Civil Engineering | 1,15,000 |
| NIT Hamirpur | Mechanical Engineering | 1,13,000 |
| NIT Meghalaya | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 1,36,000 to 1,37,000 |
| NIT Meghalaya | Mechanical Engineering | 1,21,000 |
| NIT Puducherry | Electronics and Communication Engineering | 1,14,000 |
| NIT Srinagar | Computer Science and Engineering | 1,24,000 |
| NIT Srinagar | Civil Engineering | 1,23,000 to 1,26,000 |
| NIT Srinagar | Chemical Engineering | 1,07,000 |
| NIT Srinagar | Information Technology | 1,34,000 |
| NIT Srinagar | Electrical Engineering | 1,30,000 |
| NIT Raipur | Mining Engineering | 1,04,000 |
| SVNIT Surat | Integrated MSc Mathematics | 1,03,000 |
| SVNIT Surat | Integrated MSc Physics | 1,10,000 |
| SVNIT Surat | Integrated MSc Chemistry | 1,24,000 |
| NIT Manipur | Civil Engineering | 1,47,000 |
| NIT Manipur | Electrical Engineering | 1,85,000 |
| NIT Mizoram | Civil Engineering | 2,94,000 |
| NIT Mizoram | Computer Science and Engineering | 4,44,000 |
So if your rank is around 1 lakh, there are actual NITs with actual programmes available to you right now. Please check the JoSAA data before you decide on anything.
Every family argues about this during the counselling session. Here is the most honest answer.
If two colleges are similar in reputation, always go with the branch that actually interests you. Four years studying something you genuinely do not care about is harder than most students expect. It shows up slowly. Motivation drops. Attendance becomes a problem. Grades slip. By the final year, you are just trying to get through it.
But if one college is significantly stronger and the branch is not your first choice the question is not whether you love the branch. The question is whether you can see yourself working in it after graduation without feeling like you made the wrong call every single morning.
In this rank range here is what is broadly available by branch:
| Branch | Where It Is Available |
| Computer Science and Engineering | Newer IIITs, select GFTIs |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | Most IIITs, mid tier NITs under HS quota |
| Electrical Engineering | Almost all mid tier NITs |
| Mechanical Engineering | Almost all mid tier NITs |
| Data Science and AI | IIITs like Dharwad and Bhilai |
| Category | What It Changes |
| General | Focus on core branches in mid tier NITs or ECE in newer IIITs |
| EWS and OBC NCL | Better access to CSE in mid tier NITs like NIT Patna or NIT Srinagar |
| SC and ST | Can often access CSE at genuinely strong NITs at this CRL rank |
Many students from reserved categories underestimate what is actually available to them and end up with options that are worse than their category requires. Know your category, understand what it opens up, and use it properly during counselling.
JoSAA involves choices that cannot always be undone. Most students make these choices without properly understanding what they are choosing between and why it matters.
Mentrovert works with students going through exactly this. One-on-one sessions with counsellors who actually understand JEE, JoSAA, CSAB, and how to figure out which options genuinely make sense based on your specific rank, your category, your interests, and where you want your career actually to go.
Everything is online. Location does not matter. Free sessions are available for students who cannot pay.

The college gets you in. What you do inside is still yours.
Students from NIT Agartala and NIT Mizoram have gone on to careers that nobody predicted from those campuses. Students from campuses with famous names have felt completely stuck ten years later. The institution matters, but it is not everything.
Make this decision with a clear head. Not panic. Not what sounds good to relatives. Not a rushed choice made in the worst emotional week you have had in years.
Your options are real. Figure out which one actually fits. Then go.
Yes. Real NITs, real IIITs, and real GFTIs are all available. Anyone telling you this rank leads nowhere does not actually know what is on the table.
Only drop if you genuinely believe your rank improves significantly next year. Not because this year felt disappointing. A second attempt hits students mentally differently than most expect going in.
More than most students check before counselling starts. Same branch, same college, cutoff can be 10,000 to 15,000 ranks lower under the HS quota. Check this first always.
Some yes. But check actual placement records, not brochure numbers. Look at what alumni are actually doing. Do not pay private fees without that research being done properly.
No. CSAB special rounds happen after, and cutoffs regularly drop there. Students find options in CSAB that were not available in JoSAA. Participate before assuming it is finished.
