How many NIT in India? 31. That is the current number spread across the country, with at least one in every major state. Total seats across all NIT’s in India cross 24,000. Sounds comfortable until you remember 10 lakh plus students sit JEE Main every year. Older NITs have alumni networks built over 60 years. Newer ones are still constructing hostels. That gap shows up in placements and nobody talks about it enough.

The Tier 1 consists of NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal, NIT Rourkela, NIT Calicut, MNNIT Allahabad, VNIT Nagpur, MNIT Jaipur, NIT Kurukshetra, and NIT Surat.
Tier 2 includes NIT Durgapur, NIT Patna, MANIT Bhopal, NIT Silchar, NIT Raipur, NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Jalandhar, NIT Agartala, NIT Srinagar, and NIT Meghalaya.
The newer and smaller ones such as NIT Sikkim, NIT Mizoram, NIT Hamirpur, NIT Nagaland, NIT Manipur, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, NIT Puducherry, NIT Uttarakhand, NIT Delhi, and NIT Andhra Pradesh are included in Tier 3.
Every top 10 NIT colleges in India conversation starts here and has for decades. Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Deloitte, L&T all recruit on campus. The alumni network alone is worth talking about separately.
Average CTC is Rs. 12 LPA, highest has crossed Rs. 50 LPA, and CSE closes around rank 1,224 for General Other State quota.

One of the oldest NIT colleges in India. What makes it stand apart is that Mechanical and ECE placements hold up here, not just CSE. Average CTC is Rs. 10 to 11 LPA and CSE closes around 5,200.
If core engineering is the goal rather than software, Rourkela is probably the best answer in this entire list. Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgy all do well here. Research culture is stronger here than at most NIT colleges in India. Average CTC is Rs. 10 to 11 LPA.
Coastal campus, consistent placements, students tend to have a genuinely good four years here. CSE and ECE both hold up well in placement season.
City campus, decent connectivity, strong in Electronics and Civil. Maharashtra students who miss the top five NITs often land here and find placement outcomes solid enough. Average CTC sits around Rs. 8 to 9 LPA.
Capital city location gives students industry access that smaller-town NITs cannot match. Hackathons and tech events run constantly. Average CTC is around Rs. 8 to 9 LPA.
One of the older institutes with solid academic tradition. Faculty quality is generally regarded well. Students targeting higher studies alongside placements tend to do well here.
Steady and reliable, not flashy. Placement seasons run consistently year after year. Core engineering students here find decent opportunities without the struggle some mid-tier NIT students face.
Gujarat's industrial belt gives this one better internship and placement access than its ranking suggests. Strong in certain core branches, urban location helps throughout the degree.
Best NIT in India changes completely depending on what is being asked.
For placements, NIT Trichy, not close. For campus experience, Surathkal and Calicut both have something that rankings cannot fully capture. For core engineering specifically, Rourkela has made that case for sixty years straight.
But here is what most students miss. A CSE seat at a Tier 2 NIT beats a low-demand branch at a Tier 1 NIT almost every time when you look at actual placement outcomes four years later. Branch matters as much as institute name. Sometimes more.

Civil and Mechanical close well past 30,000 at some of these same institutes. Home state quota and other state quota numbers are very different. Check both on JoSAA before locking preferences.
Annual tuition at nits in India runs Rs. 1.25 to 1.5 lakhs. Hostel and mess adds Rs. 60,000 to 80,000. Total annual cost roughly Rs. 2 to 2.5 lakhs. Fee waivers exist for SC, ST, PwD, EWS categories and several state scholarships apply depending on home state.
Campus ratings at top nits in India sit between 8.5 and 9.5 out of 10. Hostel ratings between 7.5 and 9. WiFi, reading rooms, sports complexes, health centers are standard at Tier 1 campuses. First year students mostly get shared rooms, seniors get single rooms. National fests, coding clubs, robotics teams, entrepreneurship cells run across all major campuses throughout the year.
Core branches across all NIT colleges in India include Computer Science, ECE, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering. Newer branches being added at several campuses include Data Science, AI and ML, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, and Cyber Security. Some newer NIT colleges in India are experimenting with interdisciplinary programs mixing engineering with business or life sciences.
JEE Main rank is the only entry route to NIT colleges in India. Class 12 minimum is 75 percent aggregate for General category or top 20 percentile of your board. Reserved categories get relaxation, verify on JoSAA each year. JoSAA counselling is where seat allotment actually happens. Fill and lock preferences carefully because wrong locking costs real seats across multiple rounds.
