Getting a score of above 90% in Class 12 would appear like a distant dream when you first consider it. It is pretty easy, not only for a group of supposed toppers but also for any student who is willing to stay regular and diligent in their preparation. Thousands of students make it happen every year, and you can too. All it takes is the right attitude, a well-thought-out plan, and the self-discipline to stick with it.
Most students think that you must be a genius or work 15 hours a day to have 90% in Class 12. That’s completely untrue. The CBSE board is not an advocate of rote learning and cramming; it is an advocate of clarity, comprehension, and delivery.
Then, what does it mean to have a score of 90%? It is a way to know that you have the basics worked out, you have practised to a point of writing with confidence, and you have cleverly revised. You do not necessarily have to be the brightest in the classroom. All you have to do is find a way that works and have the devotion to do it.
Keep in mind that your Class 12 results can significantly impact your college opportunities and career paths. However, they do not measure your intelligence; they simply reflect your preparation and consistency.
The first and the most significant one is to make an individualised plan of study – one which suits your pace and habits. Individually cover your entire CBSE Class 12 syllabus per subject. Write down the list of all the topics and highlight those that you consider problematic.
Get going on time, perhaps 6-8 months ahead of your boards. Scheduling of time: give time to each subject. Do not pour all your efforts into one subject simply because it seems challenging, and do not disregard the subject that you are already good at.
It is essential that there is a realistic daily schedule. Start with approximately 4-5 hours of study time and build up over time when the exams are closer. Add revision, mock and brief breaks. It is preferable to work 5 hours of concentration rather than 10 hours of distraction.
Your schedule must be a balanced one; you need to include time spent reading, practising writing, doing physical activity, and even resting. You cannot keep information in a tired mind and therefore never skip days of rest or off days.
Every CBSE topper will tell you about this: NCERT is your Bible. All question papers are made on the NCERT content. Not till you are rock-solid in your NCERT concepts should you jump to reference books or notes.
Read each chapter in detail. It is not about reading but knowing the reason behind each idea. In the case of subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics, do all the NCERT exercises and examples. In theory-based subjects such as history, political science or business studies, underline important words, write brief summaries and remember important dates or case studies.
Once you are familiar with NCERT, you can comfortably answer most of the board questions, and yet they may be twisted or application-based.
Your best friends are preparing board notes. It will do no good to parrot out line after line of the book. You require notes that are short, clear and personalised, such that you find it easy to revise.
Keep formulas, definitions and points separate in separate notebooks. Create formula charts and diagrams in science subjects. In the case of economics or business studies, develop flowcharts or speedy revision tables.
Mark ideas that you tend to forget, and employ colour codes to draw out important areas. You remember the information better because your brain relates more to what you write in your own words. These will be your reference books when you have to do last-minute revision.
One of the best tips for achieving 90% or above in Class 12 is to practice as much as you can.
Begin solving question papers of the previous years and CBSE sample papers after covering at least 60–70 per cent of your syllabus. This will make you become familiar with the pattern, types of questions and marking scheme.
Initially, you can take your own time to solve them, but as you approach your exams, you can practise solving them under real-time constraints. Once you complete each paper, also rate your responses and document the areas in which you scored low points – perhaps you were careless, missed keywords, or did not complete your explanations.
Your revision is next week, which is when you should work on those weak areas. The more papers you are able to solve, the more confident you become and the faster.
CBSE does not simply check what you are writing; it checks how you are writing as well. Presentation is a big factor in achieving good grades.
The following are just a few items that are to be remembered:
In science and maths, present all steps. First state the formula, then indicate how you calculated it, and enclose the finished answer. You may miss out on some points by the end, but you will have partial marks for correct working.
When a question uses a diagram, ensure that it is well-drawn using a pencil, well-labelled, and presented in a clear and neat manner. An examination paper is very impressive – a clean paper, and you may have higher chances of marking all the points.
Forgetting your health when preparing a board is easy; however, your body and brain require attention to act properly. An exhausted or nervous mind does not concentrate.
Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Do not get into a habit of studying too late at night. Consume home-cooked meals, drink water and consume fruits or nuts as energy sources.
During the study, take a 5-10 minute break every 45-50 minutes. Take a walk, stretch or close your eyes to relax. Make an effort to exercise your body on a daily basis – even a walk or a 20-minute yoga session can help you feel better.
It is important to remember that your concentration and memory depend on physical health.
Always remember the reason why you began this journey when you begin to feel anxious. You have laboured, and you know too much. No one should ask why you are getting better results when you should be doing your best every day.
Do not compare yourself with other people. The speed of learning is different in everyone. Discuss your problems with your teachers, parents or friends when you feel overloaded with them; your concerns can help you more than you think.
Simple relaxation methods such as deep breathing, journaling, or brief meditations can be used as well. Being calm and assertive is significant in performance.
It happens that sometimes, regardless of your best efforts, you may be at a loss on what to do next, what topics to focus on, how to use time, or what to be motivated by. It is there that good guidance comes in.
Being a mentee is not only good for enhancing your academics but also for being emotionally stable. An excellent mentor will assist you in determining what is working to your advantage, what is not and how to correct it without being overly stressed.
